Research in the primary English classroom

Classroom Action Research (CAR) for English Learning aims at discovering learning-teaching strategies that match learners style and strategies in learning English. CAR may be done in several cycles each of which is repeated in the next cycle if the result is not satisfactory yet with the better revised lesson plan. Each cycle begins with planning, implementing the plan, observing the implementation, and reflecting or evaluating the process and the result of the implementation. The result of the reflection determines the next cycle.

Research activities basically include 4 stages, namely
  •  Observation,
  •  Description,
  •  Analysis, and
  • Explanation.
The observation stage is the stage of collecting data that can be done in various forms according to the nature of the observed data, including interviews, filling out questionnaires, observation, test, identification, and so on. The purpose of observation is to collect data includes indicators or signs that can help researchers understand the  being studied.
If what is being researched is the student's achievement in learning English at school related to the gender of the student, for example, what is observed from the student (research object) is the type (variable) student gender and student's English learning achievement which is the object of the research. To observing (variable) the gender of the student, then the observation can be made by looking at the type indicator genitals, such as the way to dress, the decorations used, the mustache, the shape of the neck, the shape of the chest, the voice, the way running, and so on. By looking at these indicators the researcher can classify male studentsand group female students. To observe the achievement of English learning outcomes, researchers can also seeing records of student learning progress owned by the teacher or researcher can provide tests English. From the teacher's notes or from the test results, researchers can find learning achievement students, from low achieving students to high achievers.
The description stage consists of recording the results of the observations (data collection). Example research on the relationship between junior high school students' English learning achievement and their gender, What needs to be recorded is a list of male student groups, a list of female students, and a list of grades English of all students who are the object of the research.
The next stage is data analysis. At this stage the description results (which become data)
analyzed by certain techniques according to the nature of the data and research objectives. In the research example about the relationship between students' English learning achievement and gender, analysis can be done with the Statistics formula to compare the mean value of male student group learning outcomes and grades
mean group of female students.

The last stage is explanation, understanding, or drawing conclusions. At this stage of activity what researchers do is to give meaning or interpret the results of the analysis. In the example research on the relationship between junior high school students' English learning achievement and gender, if the result The analysis showed that the mean score of female students' English was much higher (stark difference) rather than the mean value of male students' English, for example, the researcher concludes (gives meaning, explained) that gender affects students' English learning achievement, namely students girls tend to do better in learning English than male students.
